Stroke & Spasticity

SPASTICITY

A question I receive regularly is: What is spasticity?

I’m sure you know what it is, as do I, because it involves ½ of my body, but explaining it is a different matter!

I simply respond, “extreme tightness,” yet there’s a more complex explanation.  I found the following information quite interesting.  You may as well…

The Merriam Webster Dictionary describes it as: “a condition involving hypertonic muscles.”

OK then, What are hypertonic muscles?

Referring back to the dictionary, it’s:  “exhibiting excessive tone or tension.”

Years ago, I was reading the great book entitled, “Stronger After Stroke” by Peter G. Levine and was shocked to learn that spasticity begins in the spinal cord, NOT the brainThe spinal cord sends what I call the ‘distress signal’ to the brain regarding its concern about the muscles tearing

To alleviate spasticity, neuroplasticity is the answer! Once this occurs, the brain can then again manage the normal movement of the once-spastic muscles!

Here’s Dr. Tara Tobias to explain further and help you manage your spasticity…enjoy and learn from a pro!
