From Daughter to Advocate: How a Personal Stroke Story Sparked a Doctoral Research Mission

When Lucia Berkhof’s father had a stroke in 2021, everything changed. Daily routines became frustrating obstacles, and as his only daughter, Lucia found herself navigating the emotional weight of watching someone she loves struggle with basic independence.

But thanks to his devoted medical and therapy team, her father made a healthy and inspiring recovery. That experience planted a seed in Lucia’s heart — one that would eventually grow into a mission.

Now a doctoral student in Occupational Therapy, Lucia is conducting research that’s deeply informed by her personal journey. Her current project focuses on improving OT involvement in removing barriers to social participation for individuals post-stroke. Why? Because recovery isn’t just physical — it’s social, emotional, and deeply human.

Lucia’s goal is simple: to listen, learn, and advocate for more holistic, community-centered support in stroke rehabilitation — so that no one has to face the barriers her father did.

We’re honored to share her story and support her research project. Because when lived experience fuels professional purpose, everyone benefits.

Click here to participate in her stroke study! It is open until the end of this month!
