Brain Fog & Stroke

When I was asked by a subscriber asked for remedies for brain fog, I realized I’d need to do some research; and to examine my brain fog issues!

My remedies may not work for you, so I sought out a selection of them, one or more of which may work for you.

What is brain fog? Brain fog is a common cognitive condition after an ischemic stroke. It involves:

  • Memory difficulties

  • Concentration

  • Processing speed

  • Memory clarity

Do you have brain fog?

I do. After almost 10 years post-stroke,I continue to experience ALL of the above symptoms, to one degree or another!

I continue to work on them. More on that in Part II.

That being said, I learned from my research there is no “cure,” just strategies that help reduce the symptoms and support brain healing:

  1. MEDICINES for pre and post-stroke conditions (blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes);

  2. Address UNDERLYING CAUSES: Fatigue, depression, sleep disorders (sleep apnea) and medication side effects can worsen brain fog;

  3. SPEECH THERAPY: This is a great option IF you have insurance, and IF you can find a reputable neuro therapy clinic. Clinics associated with hospitals are the best!

Personally, I take 10mg of Baclofen for leg tremors/spasms (they’re like intense ‘restless leg syndrome’). I control the tremors with the # of 10mg tablets  needed to control the tremors.It makes me extremely drowsy depending upon the dosage I have to take to control the spasms - the stronger they are, the more Baclofen I have to take!

They make me very drowsy! Brain Fog City!

<<  It’s a Catch-22!!!  >>

  1. NEURO SPEECH THERAPY: This is a great option IF you have insurance, and IF you can find a reputable neuro therapy clinic. Clinics associated with hospitals are the best!

  2. APPS: There are some great apps that can help: Lumosity, Neuro Kit, Brain HQ, Recognise Hand, & Flint Rehab has a cognitive therapy (CT) for $29.99/mo or $299.99/year

  3. LIFESTYLE, MENTAL/EMOTIONAL SUPPORT:

Physical Exercise

Healthy Diet

 (e.g.Mediterranean)

Sleep Hygiene

(7-9 hours/night)

Hydration & Avoid Alcohol

Mindfulness/Meditation

Social Engagement

Psychotherapy for Depression/Anxiety

Supplements

(Consult your nutritionist, naturopath, homeopath, chiropractic-neurologist, or doctor)

WHEN TO SEEK HELP? If brain fog worsens or new symptoms appear, consult a chiropractic-neurologist or a standard neurologist.
